The MFA Program at UCSD was a creative smorgasbord rich with interdisciplinary cross-fertilization that contributed to my love of installation and site-specific work. I studied poetry (Quincy Troupe), painting (Faith Ringgold, Kim Maconnel), writing for performance (Eleanor Antin, Kathy Acker), cinema studies with George Lipsitz, video production and anchorperson for Deep Dish TV (DeeDee Halleck), and improvisational jazz (MacArthur Grantee George Lewis.) I represented the school’s Women of Color in Activism Collective at the 4th Annual Women’s Conference in Beijing. I later relocated to Los Angeles to study performance art with Rachel Rosenthal, (performed briefly with her company), and studied performance, music, art, writing and dance at the Summer Arts Program in California State Long Beach, in an interdisciplinary course taught by California Poet-Laureate Juan-Felipe Herrera.
